흑인 사진작가의 렌즈를 통해| The One with Jonathan Middleton - On Navigating Childhood, Mental Health, and Identity in America Through the Lens of a Black Photographer: Episode 6 (2023)
The More Sibyl Podcast Presents: 흑인 사진작가의 렌즈를 통해| The One with Jonathan Middleton - On Navigating Childhood, Mental Health, and Identity in America Through the Lens of a Black Photographer: Episode 6 (2023) This week's episode features an interview with Jonathan Middleton, an art enthusiast, naturalist, and wildlife photographer with over five years of experience in the field. Photography is Jonathan's passion, and he derives great pleasure from capturing the beauty of nature through his lens. During our conversation, Jonathan opened up about some of his significant challenges and struggles, including growing up and searching for answers to questions about his faith, mental health, and navigating issues related to racism, insecurities from his own community, and sexuality. In addition, he shared the many hurdles he has had to overcome in his journey. Despite facing significant obstacles, Jonathan has found solace and purpose in photography. Through his lens, he has captured the beauty of the natural world and expressed his creativity. In addition, he views photography as a form of therapy, helping him to find peace and clarity amid life's difficulties. As our conversation drew close, Jonathan and I reflected on the importance of a supportive community. Despite negative experiences with people from our backgrounds, it's important to remember that good people are still out there. In addition, our own community members often play a crucial role in our lives, serving as a source of support and encouragement.

은혜와 책임| The One with Linda Jena – On Cancel Culture from a Biblical Perspective: Episode 36 (2021)
The More Sibyl Podcast Presents 은혜와 책임| The One with Linda Jena – On Cancel Culture from a Biblical Perspective: Episode 36 (2021) While there's a good chance you reading this may not yet have been canceled, there's a high probability that you know someone, perhaps, a celebrity, who has been through that wringer. What then is cancel culture and why has it become a cultural force in recent years? That said, we can all agree that public accountability is also necessary for most instances. So how do we then strike the balance between "canceling" people vs holding them accountable? And who gets to be the jury, judge, and executioner? Also, how do we cancel people with clear convictions? Does cancel culture even give the space for true reflection and repentance in the canceled ones? As you can imagine, there are no quick answers to these complex questions. This was why I brought Ms. Linda Jena back on the show. Apart from being such a dear friend and sister, she's also one of the wisest people I know. And one who usually has all the answers. So, in this episode, we explored cancel culture together, especially what the Bible has to say about it. Forgiveness, as we know, is a uniquely Christian virtue. Others may forgive, but only Christians have such a solid basis for forgiveness. As C.S. Lewis says, ‘To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.' And for the non-Christians, it's your opportunity to hear how to hold your Christian friends accountable, should they also fall short. Listen to the full episode here. Got questions? Our first episode is with my fellow lawyer turned creative @falzthebahdguy. Folarin is a dream scene partner, willing to throw himself right into the deep end with you (He came on set and was immediately trying to direct lol). Witty, great comedic timing, huge presence and just the right amount of craze. Was great to have him as our first episode because he set the bar. After his shoot, the crew knew we were not playing, so thank you for lending your time and your talent @falzthebahdguy. P:s- I’m toasting him here because I roasted him in the episode but when you watch you will see, he’s the one that started it so I rest my case. Host: Chinasa Anukam Guest: Falz

Be Thoughtful And Be Thankful
John 6:8-18 WNT - 8. One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, 9 "There is a boy here with five barley loaves and a couple of fish: but what is that among so many?" 10 "Make the people sit down," said Jesus. The ground was covered with thick grass; so they sat down, the adult men numbering about 5,000. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were resting on the ground; and also the fish in like manner--as much as they desired. 12 When all were fully satisfied, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the broken portions that remain over, so that nothing be lost." 13 Accordingly they gathered them up; and with the fragments of the five barley loaves--the broken portions that remained over after they had done eating--they filled twelve baskets. 14 Thereupon the people, having seen the miracle He had performed, said, "This is indeed the Prophet who was to come into the world." 15 Perceiving, however, that they were about to come and carry Him off by force to make Him a king, Jesus withdrew again up the hill alone by Himself. 16 When evening came on, His disciples went down to the Lake. 17 There they got on board a boat, and pushed off to cross the Lake to Capernaum. By this time it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 The Lake also was getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mildred-kingsley-okonkwo0/message

The Friendship Recession reaction (and why it's hard to make friends nowadays)
Friendship seems to be taking a big hit these days. Lots of people are losing friends rampantly and aren't making new ones as easily as they used to especially before the era of social media. There's also the fact that we don't seem to be making quality friendships as much as we used to. Friendships that are characterised by openness, trust, vulnerability and sincerity. Recently, author & academic Richard Reeves talked about the challenge millions of people around the work are currently facing when it comes to friendship and its apparent decline today in a brilliant video titled 'The friendship recession' and on this episode of the podcast I examine it a bit and talk about the part of the video that really resonated with me. I also share my own challenges regarding friendships I've lost in recent years. Enjoy. PS: I referred to 'The friendship recession' as a documentary several times in this episode when it's actually more of just a youtube video. #1 - Asa
Asa is a superstar from Nigeria. Championed around the globe for her expansive approach to music, she’s Africa’s leading progressive artist, with a catalogue that runs through 5 albums, capturing the soul of her people. It’s hard to think of an artist from West Africa who has traversed as many spaces—with class, creativity, and soul—as she has. With a voice as rich as her catalogue of inspirations, the Nigerian native singer-songwriter and multi-platinum selling recording artist fuses Pop, Afro pop-driven, and soft-soul, taking cues from cross-continental greats– from Fela Kuti to Miriam Makeba; King Sunny Ade to Sade; Tina Turner to Lenny Kravitz. A soaring vocalist and masterful guitarist, Asa is a calming presence blending Parisian jazz, Yoruba folk and soul into her albums. She writes personal lyrics ranging from her love life and mental health to her extensive travels and interactions with people.

When Japa Fails ft. Lordson Atason
There are large disparities on how many Nigerians live in the diaspora, according to a PWC report, official figures from 2017 state that 1.24 million Nigerians live in the diaspora, a figure that is believed to be far higher now but some figures state that as many as 5- 15million Nigerians live abroad. Whatever the figure is now, many Nigerians live in the diaspora and day by day more people contribute to the "Japa" wave - This is essentially a wave of Nigerians leaving the country for better lives abroad but it doesn't always work out as planned and some people have found themselves back at home like Lordson, my guest on the podcast. Red Flags
We can be so blind that we choose to ignore questionable actions portrayed by our partner, and more often than not, those are the things that eventually lead to the end of the relationship. On this episode, Dolly breaks down 10 red flags collated by ‘Psychology Today’ that we should not overlook. At this point in our adulthood, I’m sure a few of us have experienced at least one relationship and in most circumstances, there have been times when the relationship has ended in tears. I know that I definitely had to leave a relationship when things had gotten really bad between us. So, Red card is a safe space where we discuss the things/issues that have caused relationships to end and the reasons behind them and in this episode, we are going to be talking about Red Flags. This has been a trending topic on social media lately with people discussing the red flags that can instantly stop them from going further with someone. Now, what are Red flags? Psychology Today describes red flags as “indicators that something needs to be questioned or otherwise validated?” and also discusses 10 red flags that we should not ignore. Join Dolly on this episode as she explores those red flags on Jamit.fm

Presidential Profiles: Atiku Abubakar
Later this week, Nigerians will head to the polls to elect a new President. To ease the decision-making process, we have been digging into the three main candidates to help voters get a better sense of who they are. What do we know about their childhood(s)? What do their pre-political days tell us about their candidacies? How did they get into Politics? What is the case for or against their candidacies? What are their chances? For Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), this is potentially his last shot at an office he first sought about 30 years ago. What Are You Afraid Of? - Identifying the 3 fears that are in opposition to your purpose!
You cannot begin to live a purpose driven life without overcoming the number one enemy - FEAR. This is an unpleasant emotion that we all deal with throughout our lives. However, fear can also be misunderstood, especially when it serves as an obstacle in the way of serving your purpose in life. In this episode you will be taken through 3 types of fear that are in constant opposition to your purpose and how to find the courage to defeat them! THE FEAR OF FAILURE - The fear of failure comes along when you attach your worth to your wins. Your ego will trick you into believing that you must protect your wins at all costs. However, reality proves that this is an impossible task. Therefore, you create a fake reality for your life where failure can be avoided. This is known as the comfort zone and pride will keep you there. Your purpose always operates outside of your comfort zone and courage enforced through humility is what will get you there. THE FEAR OF REJECTION - The fear of rejection comes along when you attach your worth to the acceptance of man. Therefore, you should never allow this type of fear to interfere with your calling because that said calling was never orchestrated by man. You begin to understand this by becoming self aware and accepting who God created you to be. Once you become truly confident in this, you will no longer live a life that is driven by the acceptance of other people. THE FEAR OF DEATH - The fear of death comes along through the desire to survive. However survival is meaningless if you are only living to survive. You must survive with the intention to truly live. You are called to serve a purpose that will outlive you; which means it is more important than the preservation of your life in the grand scheme of things. We will never have control over when we die but we have over how we live our lives. The fear of death can never be allowed to overcome your God given purpose. Is fear holding you back? Prevention is Better Than Cure
In this episode I talk about how I neglected my physical health for many years until I hit rock bottom. I tell the story of what I experienced with my struggles with asthma and how my adversity ultimately strengthened my spirituality and my relationship with God. This episode highlights a period of my life where my physical and mental weakness gave birth to a new found spiritual strength. I cover three life changing things that were triggered by this one experience. Lifestyle Change - There is a direct correlation between your health and the way in which you live your life. Most illnesses are self-induced and this was definitely the case for me. I could no longer continue to live a life that does not prioritise my physical or mental health. Facing Grief - When we lose loved ones, we have the tendency to run away from the reality of it. I was guilty of masking the grief of losing my mother with so many distractions until I fell sick and had nowhere else to run or to hide. Finding Purpose - When all things failed I was forced to lean on my faith. Thats all I had. This led me to begin the journey of understanding my purpose and the calling over my life. Reflecting on the impactful life that my mother lived, inspired me to begin to follow in her footsteps. This is what gave birth to this podcast and the changes I am making in my life today. The Men Have Become Baddies
On this episode, you hear 3 women; me, Dami & MJ, who are dangerously pushing 30 use words like 'purrr' for some reason, we wanna be GenZ so bad it's hilarious. I had a wonderful and funny conversation with the ladies where we try to find out if men are self-aware enough to know when they are being wicked or are men just oblivious to their evils. We also dissect the baddie phenomenon, ladies we have some competition, the men are becoming baddies too. This episode was so fun, so open and so cool, chatting to best friends is always fun, because there is always tea spilled. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it. The Future of Work is Local Jobs - A Case Study
In the first episode of this season, we argued that the future of work is a traditional development playbook. Considering the nature of most African markets today - informal, fragmented, subscale - and considering the fact that most employment comes from the agriculture sector, the traditional development playbook says that development starts by increasing the productivity of the informal sector and the agriculture sector, in particular. These jobs are local jobs. In the context of Africa's rising population, millions of jobs need to be created and millions of local jobs will need to be created. But where are newfound local jobs going to come? This episode is a case study. We'll explore the decentralized renewable energy sector, or DRE, to see what job creation from a nascent industry could look like. Where there are sectors that are growing in importance in size, like the clean energy sector, how can African markets take advantage? 2:59 - The seeds of this episode's exploration were planted during a conversation with Shortlist's Paul Breloff. There are significant opportunities for sectors that are actually creating local jobs, and one sector they are bullish on is decentralized renewable energy. 4:28 - We dig into Power for All's Powering Jobs Census, to explore the scope of DRE's local job creation, with its research director, Carolina Pan. 10:51 - Exploring the second-order benefits of DRE, including indirect and induced jobs. The Future of Work Won't Look Like a Job
The future of work in the African context is going to be a lot of different things. It mimics the nature of work itself for many individuals on the continent. They're taking this portfolio approach to work. Even in more "developed markets" we're seeing work become less formal and more flexible, as work becomes unbundled from employment. And this evolution of work itself provides a whole set of new challenges and opportunities. So this episode is a retrospective on the entire season, in which we explore more of these questions about the future of work in this context. And joining The Flip's Justin Norman and Kandua's Sayo Folawiyo for this conversation is friend of The Flip, Chris Maclay, the Program Director for the Jobtech Alliance at Mercy Corps. 00:00 - Intro. 04:30 - Portfolio of work, earnings, stability, growth. 08:40 - Who gets to decide if a job is good or bad? 15:48 - Training, enablement, and platforms. 19:48 - The HustleOS and micro-franchising. 24:28 - The Future of Work is a portfolio of work. 29:54- Digital services for export. 32:57- Market sizing platform-enabled digital work. 41:39 - Should there have been an episode called The Future of Work is Universal Basic Income? This season of The Flip is sponsored by MFS Africa.
